You check around the car, maybe a branch or something fell on the roof and set off the alarm. It’s easy to miss that kind of thing so you wanted to be sure. But the car seems fine. After circling around it you open the driver’s side door and get in. You decide to see what the radio stations are like around here, so you turn the key and start the car. The startup tones are different from when you’ve started it up before. It probably does that after the alarm goes off, maybe.
The radio programming around 4:30am in the middle of nowhere is nothing exceptional, so you decide to switch it off and just sit in silence. It’s just light enough to make out some faint details of the area, including a beautiful stream next to the cabin that looks fast-flowing and ice cold. Viewing the wintry scene and the last stars in the sky from the familiar car interior of plastic and dusty fabric, you’re fairly comfortable and at peace. Your mind wanders, and you think about nothing in particular as you relax in the car.
After a while, you decide to get started with the day. You saw a diner that looked inviting on your way in last night. A cup of diner coffee and a western omelette sound really good right now. Or coffee and a tall stack of pancakes, or a plate of corned beef hash…
